The Race List & Filters

Once you have installed and logged-in to HorsePower you will see a screen like the one below. Most of the info and fields shown should be pretty self-explanatory, but here is a quick rundown of what they all mean.

The Race List

In the left-hand panel you will find a list of all upcoming races.

The information shown here, from left to right, is:

  • The number of horses listed for the race. Note that this number will not account for any recently scratched horses.
  • The race number (or distance for UK races)
  • The track name
  • The scheduled start time of the race, shown in your local timezone
  • The amount of time left until the start

At the top of the race list you will also find a search field that can be used to quickly find certain races.

The Filters

In the grey/green bar along the top you will find the bookie dropdown and the following filters:

Each of these filters has an information icon that you can hover over to learn more about what they do, so we won’t go into too much detail here. However, one filter that is worth giving a bit more info on is the ‘Default Retention %’.

‘Retention’ relates to the amount of profit that we make from a bonus bet. For example, if we can turn a $50 bonus bet into $40 in cash our retention rate would be 80%.

In order to calculate the expected value on any bet that we place on a racing promo, we need to know how much our profit will be if our horse finishes 2nd or 3rd and we get the bonus. Obviously we can’t know for sure how much we will make from each individual bonus, but we can make an estimate based on our previous experience. This estimate should go in the ‘Default Retention %’ field.

If that field is left blank HorsePower will assume that you cannot earn bonus bets on that race. As a result, the EV of all of the horses will show as negative.

It is also worth drawing attention to the Bookie dropdown menu here. This is where you select the bookies that you are working with:

If no bookies are selected HorsePower will only open Betfair when you click on a race, and the table won’t load.
