Betfair Bonus: Does Betfair offer a bonus?
Betfair Australia does not offer bonus bets or promotions very often, but they do offer something more useful: the ability to turn bookmaker bonus bets into cash you can withdraw, whichever way the result goes.
If you searched for a Betfair promo code, you won’t find one from Betfair itself. The value sits on the other side of the bet. Bookmakers hand out bonus bets constantly, and Betfair is the tool that lets you lock in most of what each one is worth. That is the whole idea behind matched betting, and it starts with understanding what an exchange does.
What a Betting Exchange Is
A bookmaker sets the odds and takes the other side of every bet you place. An exchange works differently. It matches punters against each other, and you choose which side you want. You can back a selection to win, like you would at a bookmaker, or you can lay it, which means betting that it won’t win.
The amount you would pay out is called your liability. Say you lay a horse for $39.06 at odds of 5.20. If the horse loses, you receive $39.06. If it wins, you pay $164.05, which is $39.06 multiplied by 4.20. Betfair holds that liability from your balance until the race settles.
Betfair earns its money through commission, a small percentage of your net winnings in each market. It doesn’t build a margin into the odds the way a bookmaker does, which is why Betfair prices usually sit very close to the true chance of each outcome.
How to Use Betfair to Profit From Bookmaker Bonuses
A bonus bet on its own is still a bet. Put it on a horse and you either win or get nothing. Pair it with a lay bet on Betfair and the outcome stops mattering, because any money you lose on one side comes back on the other.
Here is a complete example using a common offer type: bet $50 at a bookmaker and receive a $50 bonus bet. All figures use 8% Betfair commission, which is the default for horse racing.
Back a selection for $50 at the bookmaker at odds of 3.00. Lay the same selection on Betfair for $49.67 at 3.10.
If it wins, the bookmaker pays you $100 profit and your Betfair lay costs $104.31. If it loses, you lose $50 at the bookmaker and collect $45.70 on Betfair after commission. Either way you are down about $4.30, and the bookmaker releases your $50 bonus bet.
Place the $50 bonus bet at the bookmaker at odds of 5.00. With a bonus bet you keep the winnings but not the stake, so a win pays $200. Lay the same selection on Betfair for $39.06 at 5.20.
If it wins, you collect $200 and your lay costs $164.05, leaving $35.95. If it loses, the bonus bet is gone but your lay pays $39.06, or $35.94 after commission. You bank about $35.94 whatever happens.
| Step | If the selection wins | If the selection loses |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifying bet | −$4.31 | −$4.30 |
| Bonus bet | +$35.95 | +$35.94 |
| Total | +$31.64 | +$31.64 |
That is $31.64 profit from one offer, with the result of both races making no difference to it. The $50 bonus bet converted at around 72% of its face value, and the maths works the same way on any bookmaker offer that pays out in bonus bets.
Betfair Commission
Commission is charged on your net winnings in a market, never on losing bets. Betfair calls the rate its Market Base Rate, and it varies by market. For Australian racing, what counts is the state where the race is run and the racing code, not where you live.
| Market | Market Base Rate |
|---|---|
| Most sports | 6% |
| International racing | 6% |
| NRL | 10% |
| Australian racing | 8% or 10%, depending on state and code |
These rates come from Betfair’s commissions and charges page, checked September 2026. To see the exact rate for any market, open it on Betfair and click Rules. Commission is the main cost in matched betting, so it is built into every lay stake calculation. The matched betting calculator lets you enter your rate and adjusts the lay stake so both outcomes finish level. For the background on Betfair’s latest rate update, see our Betfair commission news.
Getting Started With Betfair
You’ll need a Betfair account alongside your bookmaker accounts. Signing up takes a few minutes, and Betfair will ask you to verify your identity before you can withdraw, so it pays to do that straight away. Deposit enough to cover the liability on your first lay bet. In the example above that was $164.05 for the bonus bet.
Before placing anything, run your numbers through the calculator. Enter the back odds, lay odds, stake and commission, choose whether it is a qualifying bet or a bonus bet, and it gives you the exact lay stake. If you’d like to see an exchange in action first, our Betfair Beginners video walks through placing a lay bet from start to finish.
