Odds boosts: how to profit from boosted odds

Bookies boost prices every day to catch punters’ attention. Most boosts only make a bad price a little less bad. The good ones beat the Betfair price, and that’s when you can lock in a profit before the game starts.

+$5.42Locked in from one $50 bet on a boost that beats the Betfair lay price, whichever way the game goes. The numbers are below.

Lock it, value bet it or skip it

Every boost falls into one of three groups. Compare the boosted price with the Betfair lay price and you’ll know which.

Lock it in

Boost beats the lay price

Back the boost and lay it at Betfair. You make the same profit whatever happens, like the worked example below.

Value bet it

Boost beats the true price

Laying it would cost a little, but the boosted price is still better than the real chance of it winning. Backed over and over, these bets come out ahead.

Skip it

Boost is still too short

Plenty of boosts are just marketing. If the boosted price is still below the market, it’s a bad bet with a bigger number on it.

A worked example with real numbers

A bookie boosts a team from 3.00 to 3.50. The same team is 3.05 to lay at Betfair. You back it for $50 at the boosted price and lay it at Betfair. Commission is 5%.

The bets

Back the boost: $50 at 3.50$50.00
Lay at Betfair: $58.33 at 3.05$119.58 liability
Total you need$169.58

The outcomes

Team wins: $125 bookie profit, less $119.58 liability+$5.42
Team loses: $55.42 lay win after commission, less the $50 stake+$5.42
Profit either way+$5.42
Profit locked in before the game starts, whichever side wins +$5.42

Example odds only, not a current offer. Boosts usually have a low maximum stake, so each one is a small win. The profit comes from doing them every day, and taking boosts looks like normal punting, which helps keep your accounts open for bigger promos.

Odds boost calculator

Enter the boosted price and the Betfair lay price. The calculator gives you the lay stake and tells you whether to lock it in, value bet it or skip it.

The best boosts go fast

Good boosts get taken quickly, and bookies pull or cut them once the money comes in. Seeing them early is most of the battle.

Questions people ask

Are all odds boosts profitable?

No. Many boosts only make a bad price a little less bad. A boost is worth taking when it beats the Betfair lay price, so you can lock in a profit, or when it beats the true chance of winning, so it’s a value bet.

Can I lock in a profit with odds boosts?

Yes, when the boosted price is higher than the Betfair lay price after commission. Back the boost, lay it at Betfair, and you make the same profit whatever happens. The example above locked in $5.42 from a $50 bet.

What if I can’t lock in a profit?

If the boost still beats the true price, you can back it without laying and treat it as a value bet. Some bets lose, but over many boosts you come out ahead. If the boost is below the market price, skip it.

Will taking boosts get my account limited?

Boosts usually have a low maximum stake, and backing them looks like normal punting. Mixed in with your other bets, they’re one of the lower-risk promos for account health.
