Middles: win both bets when the result lands in between

Bookies don’t always set the same line. When one has Over 189.5 points and another has Under 192.5, you can back both. If the final score lands in the gap, both bets win.

How a middle works

Middles turn up when bookies post different lines on the same market. They’re most common on totals and handicaps in high-scoring sports like AFL, NRL, NBA and NFL.

  1. Find a gapOne bookie’s Over line sits below another bookie’s Under line on the same market.
  2. Back both sidesBack the Over at one bookie and the Under at the other, splitting your stake so either result costs the same.
  3. Most results missIf the score lands outside the gap, one bet wins and the other loses, and you’re down a few dollars.
  4. The middle landsIf the score lands inside the gap, both bets win. That’s the double payout.

A worked example: AFL total points

Bookie A has Over 189.5 points at 1.95. Bookie B has Under 192.5 points at 1.95. You have $200 to use, so you back each side for $100. A final score of 190, 191 or 192 lands in the middle.

The bets

Over 189.5 at Bookie A, odds 1.95$100.00
Under 192.5 at Bookie B, odds 1.95$100.00
Total staked$200.00

The outcomes

189 or under: the Under wins, returning $195−$5.00
193 or over: the Over wins, returning $195−$5.00
190 to 192: both win, returning $390+$190.00
Score lands in the middle and both bets win +$190.00

Example odds only. This isn’t locked in: most results miss the middle and cost a few dollars ($5.00 here). If the middle lands about 1 time in 25, that averages +$2.80 per bet. The wider the gap between the two lines, the more often it lands.

Finding good middles by hand is the hard part

Lines move constantly, and a gap between two bookies can close within minutes. Comparing lines and calculating value manually isn’t realistic.

Questions people ask

What is a middle in betting?

A middle is when you back both sides of a market at two bookies with different lines, leaving a gap between them. If the result lands in that gap, both bets win.

Is middling risk-free?

No. Most results miss the middle, and each miss usually costs a few dollars. The profit comes from the middles that land, which pay far more than the misses cost. It’s a high variance strategy that works over many bets.

How often do middles land?

It depends on the sport and how wide the gap is. The wider the gap between the two lines, the more often the result lands inside it. The calculator above shows how often a middle needs to land to be worth taking.

Do I need a Betfair account?

Not usually. Most middles are between two bookies. The Betfair Exchange runs line and total markets too, so it can sometimes be one side of a middle.
