How to turn bonus bets into cash
A bonus bet is not cash yet. Matched betting turns it into money you can withdraw, whichever way the result goes. Most Australians start here, with the welcome and first deposit offers new customers receive.

How it works
Bookies can no longer advertise sign-up bonuses to the public, but plenty still send new customers a welcome or first deposit offer once they register. Each one follows the same four steps.
- Open an accountJoin a bookie you haven’t used before. Many send a welcome or deposit offer within minutes.
- Place the qualifierBack a selection at the bookie, then lay the same selection on the Betfair Exchange. The two bets cancel out, so the cost is a few dollars at most.
- Receive the bonus betThe bookie credits your bonus bet once the qualifier conditions are met.
- Convert it to cashBack with the bonus bet and lay again at Betfair. You keep the same profit whichever side wins.
A worked example with real numbers
Here is one $100 offer from start to finish. Betfair commission is set at 5%.
Step 1: the qualifier
| Back at the bookie: $100 at 3.00 | $100.00 |
| Lay at Betfair: $98.36 at 3.10 | $206.56 liability |
| If your selection wins | -$6.56 |
| If your selection loses | -$6.56 |
| Qualifying cost | -$6.56 |
Step 2: the $100 bonus bet
| Back with the bonus bet: $100 at 5.00 | stake not returned |
| Lay at Betfair: $77.67 at 5.20 | $326.21 liability |
| If your selection wins | +$73.79 |
| If your selection loses | +$73.79 |
| Bonus bet profit | +$73.79 |
Example only, not a current offer. Odds and offer sizes vary, and you’ll need enough in your Betfair account to cover the lay liability. Once the bets are placed the result is locked in, which is why matched betting on an offer like this is risk-free. The one thing to manage is choosing reputable bookies, which our guides cover.

Finding the right odds is the slow part
The closer your back and lay odds, the more you keep. Doing that by hand means checking dozens of markets.

Questions people ask
Is this really risk-free?
Yes, once both bets are placed. You back one outcome at the bookie and lay the same outcome at Betfair, so every result is covered and your profit is set before the event starts. The worked example above shows the numbers. The part you control is choosing reputable bookies and entering stakes correctly, and the calculator handles the stakes for you.
How much can I make from welcome bonuses?
A converted bonus bet usually returns 70 to 80 percent of its face value, less a few dollars in qualifying cost. The $100 offer above left $67.23. Your total depends on how many bookies you join and the offers they send you. After the welcome offers, refund offers and racing promos keep going every day.
Can Australian bookies offer sign-up bonuses?
Not just for opening an account. Under the National Consumer Protection Framework, bookies cannot offer a bonus as an incentive to open an account or to refer a friend. Once you have an account, many bookies send deposit offers, bonus bets and other promos, and those are what matched betting turns into cash.
How much money do I need to start?
Many members start with around $400. You need enough for the bookie deposit plus the lay liability at Betfair, which is larger than your stake. Start with smaller offers and work up as your balance grows.
Is matched betting legal in Australia?
Yes. You’re placing ordinary bets with licensed bookmakers and Betfair. Some bookmakers’ terms don’t allow it, and they can limit an account they don’t want. Our guides show you how to keep accounts healthy for longer.
Will bookies limit my account?
Some will, over time. Bookies are quicker to limit accounts these days, which is why mug betting and spreading your action matter. Members who follow our account guides keep their accounts active much longer and move on to daily racing promos.
