Spring Racing Carnival 2026: How to Profit From Racing Promos
The next five weeks are the best of the year for racing promos. Here are the key dates, the promos worth your time, a worked example with the maths shown, and what’s new in HorsePower v5.0.0, our biggest racing update yet.
Spring Racing Carnival 2026 Key Dates
The Carnival has been building since late August, and October is where it peaks. Every Saturday from here to the Melbourne Cup has at least one major meeting, and Cup week adds three more big days.

| Sat 24 Oct | Cox Plate, held at Flemington this year while Moonee Valley is redeveloped |
| Sat 31 Oct | Victoria Derby Day at Flemington and the Golden Eagle at Randwick |
| Tue 3 Nov | Melbourne Cup, Flemington |
| Thu 5 Nov | Oaks Day, Flemington |
| Sat 7 Nov | Champions Stakes Day, Flemington |
Why the Carnival Is the Best Time for Matched Betting
Racing promos are the most consistent way to make money from matched betting in Australia, and the Carnival is when bookmakers compete hardest for your attention. On a big Saturday, many bookmakers run promos on the same meetings, often across every race on the card.
Races are only minutes apart, so the opportunities come quickly and the profits stack up across an afternoon. A single Carnival Saturday can offer more racing promos than a quiet week in winter.
The trade-off is speed. Prices move fast in the minutes before a race jumps, so you need to spot the best bet for each promo and place both sides before the odds change. That is the problem HorsePower was built to solve.
Racing Promos to Look For
Most Carnival promos fall into a handful of types. Each one gives you something extra on top of a normal bet, and matched betting is how you turn that extra into cash.
If your horse runs 2nd or 3rd, the bookmaker refunds your stake as a bonus bet, usually up to a set limit. These are the most common racing promos and the one we work through below.
Some promos refund your stake as a bonus bet if your horse loses, no matter where it finishes. These offer huge value, and can even be used to lock-in a guaranteed profit.
A boosted price raises the value of a bet above the market. When the boost pushes a bookmaker’s price above the Betfair lay price, you can back and lay for a profit.
Worked Example: A 2nd or 3rd Refund
Here is a typical Carnival promo: back a horse and get your stake back as a bonus bet, up to $50, if it runs 2nd or 3rd. The figures use 8% Betfair commission and convert the bonus bet at about 75% of its value.
Back the horse for $50 at the bookmaker at odds of 6.00. Lay the same horse on Betfair for $49.02 at 6.20, which ties up $254.90 in liability.
If the horse wins, the bookmaker pays $250 profit and the lay costs $254.90. If it loses, you lose $50 at the bookmaker and collect $45.10 on Betfair after commission. Either way you are down $4.90.
If the horse runs 2nd or 3rd, the bookmaker refunds your $50 as a bonus bet. Converted with matched betting, that is worth about $37.50 in cash.
Take off the $4.90 from step 1 and that race finishes $32.60 ahead.
| Result | Profit |
|---|---|
| Horse wins | −$4.90 |
| Horse runs 2nd or 3rd | +$32.60 |
| Horse finishes 4th or worse | −$4.90 |
A runner at 6.00 finishes 2nd or 3rd roughly three times in ten. Over ten races like this one, that is about three refunds worth $37.50 each against ten small costs of $4.90, or roughly +$63. Some weeks the refunds land more often and some weeks less, but across a Carnival full of these promos the averages work in your favour.

What’s New in HorsePower v5.0.0
HorsePower is a Chrome extension that compares bookmaker odds against Betfair in real time. For each promo it shows which runners give you the highest expected value, so you can act in the minutes before a race jumps instead of checking prices by hand.
Version 5.0.0 is a major overhaul, built for exactly this time of year.
A new button on the results table fills your bookmaker and Betfair betslips with the correct stakes automatically. On a busy Saturday, those saved seconds are often the difference between getting the price and missing it.
See the status of every open bookmaker tab at a glance, so you know the odds are fresh and no tab has gone to sleep.
Build your own mode to match a new type of promo or your own strategy. HorsePower is now fully customisable to the way you bet.
HorsePower runs in Chrome on desktop. Full HorsePower across 80+ bookmakers is included in Plus and Pro, along with the Racing Matcher and the Discord RaceBot for when you are away from your desk. Standard members get HorsePower Lite, covering 20 bookmakers. See the HorsePower page for the full feature list.
Melbourne Cup: The Best Day to Convert Bonus Bets
For racing promos, the Saturdays leading up to the Cup are the real highlight. Bookmakers are fighting for attention on those cards, and that is where most of the Carnival’s value sits. Cup day itself still has promos, especially on the earlier races, but with the whole country already having a bet, bookmakers don’t need to be as generous.
Where the Cup really shines is converting bonus bets. A big field means plenty of runners at long odds, Betfair has some of the deepest liquidity of the year, and bookmakers compete hard on price. With so many recreational punters betting on the day, your bets blend in with everyone else’s.
Long odds matter because a bonus bet keeps more of its value the higher the price. Back a $50 bonus bet at 21.00 and lay it on Betfair at 22.00, and you keep about $41.97 whichever horse wins, or 84% of its value, compared with around 75% at shorter odds. The catch is liability: that lay ties up $958.02, so you need a well-funded Betfair account.
To be ready, verify your bookmaker and Betfair accounts this week, since verification can take a few days and you can’t withdraw until it is done. Check the expiry on bonus bets you collect over the Carnival Saturdays and save any that will still be valid for Cup day, and build your Betfair balance so it can cover the bigger liabilities. A quieter meeting like Caulfield Guineas Day on 10 October is a good chance to get comfortable with your workflow first.
If you’re new to matched betting, the free beginners course walks you through your first bets in an afternoon, with time to spare before the Cup.
Common Questions
For most racing promos, yes. You lay your bet on the Betfair Exchange to cover the other outcome, and you need enough in your account to cover the lay liability.
Not every individual race. Each bet usually costs a few dollars, and the profit comes when the refund lands. Over many races the refunds more than cover the small costs, which is why these promos are worth doing across a whole Carnival.
Full HorsePower across 80+ bookmakers is included in Plus and Pro. Standard includes HorsePower Lite, which covers 20 bookmakers.
